Year 13 Outdoor Ed (Possible Course for 2024 - NOT confirmed)
PREREQUISITES: No prior knowledge or experience in the outdoors needed. A positive attitude to personal development and challenge. The course will have restrictions due to health and safety ratios. Selection will be via a written proposal to the teacher in charge, stating what the student would like to gain from the course and the suitability they feel it is for them and why.
This course is proposed as a practical course for boys who have an interest in developing their hands-on outdoor skills and leadership capability in a range of activities.
AIMS: Boys would learn how to safely manage a range of equipment in areas such as kayaking, rock climbing, mountain biking and bush craft. There would be regular practical skills training which would be based on developing the skills for being assessed in a range of largely unit standards. They will also learn the practical steps in safety management in planning expeditions, and develop confidence, leadership capability and teamwork skills that would contribute to a positive outdoor experience. Leading junior students will be a part of the course with the expectation that students are assistants on junior camps at Te Anau Downs.
Costs:There will be some specialist instructors used as well as overnight camps. There will be associated costs with these which will be outlined at the start of the year.
Plan and implement a personal exercise programme to participate in the 3 Peaks mountain run at the end of term 1 (27 kms).

Outdoor Education Students will be required to develop and implement the skills involving safety management, necessary to plan, implement and lead an expedition in the outdoors. These skills will be applied during a snow caving expedition at the Wanaka Snow Farm. There is the possibility of courses in Scuba Diving for your PADI Qualification and First Aid.
Sports Education Students will be required to plan, and implement a skill learning programme while investigating applying motor learning principles and a biochemical analysis all within a sports activity context.
Community Studies Students will be required to carry out research on a current community issue in health and physical education.

FUTURE STUDIES / CAREER OPTIONS This course is proposed as a practical course for boys who have an interest in developing their hands-on outdoor skills and leadership capability in a range of activities. This would open up the option for boys to consider further study through Te Pūkenga which would move them into careers in the outdoors industry. Currently Te Pukenga runs the NZ Certificate in Outdoor and Adventure Education which allows students to become accomplished in certain outdoor skills so they can instruct.
