Year 9 Option Details
Art
Two different & diverse approaches to art making (sculpture & painting). Sculpture: students study traditional and contemporary figurative sculpture and model small figures over a wire armature using an air dry clay material. These are ultimately finished with paint to describe a bronze effect. Painting: students gain an understanding of the modernist period in art making and produce a cubist style painting based on the study of an artist model. |
Drama
Be prepared for a creative journey through the arts...exploring not only the basics of drama, but exploring the realms of media and technology, theatre and film genres, music, and improvisation. Year 9 Drama is a 1/3 of the year course... and we focus on four main areas during this time: Core drama skills (warm-ups, voice skills, communication, and movement/body skills); movement and music in the form of Lip Syncing, Rituals in performance (exploring cultural myths and legends), and a Duologue unit - focussing on script and character work. |
Music
Year 9 Music introduces students to music from contrasting styles and contexts, including Blues and Electronic Music. Students will develop practical skills in group performance, composition, and usage of music technology (i.e. Soundtrap and Flat.io). They will also develop fundamental musical literacies that allow them to express and communicate their ideas. |
3D Design
This subject focuses on developing design and drawing skills. Drawing skills learned are freehand, 3D modeling, rendering, instrumental and digital media ( Fusion 360 and Archicad). The design skills learned are through a variety of product and architectural design briefs. |
Digital Technology
Students are introduced to the world of game design and development and encouraged to develop their creativity while becoming effective problem solvers. They learn about programming concepts and constructs in a fun development environment (GameFroot) that is New Zealand designed and reflects the country and world in which they live. Using GameFroot the students will create games that allow them to explore and showcase their skills and understanding. Their work can then be shared with classmates, friends and the wider community. |
Food Technology
Preparation and cookery skills are the main focus at Year 9. This means creating and serving food for the majority of the cooking periods; this is a learn by doing option. There are theory lessons and these focus on the nutritional challenges faced by New Zealand diet. These include: our tendency to not eat enough fibre, eat too much salt, eat too much saturated fat and not enough vegetables. If there was ever a subject for life: it is cooking. There is a cost of approximately $60/student though this depends on the actual cost of ingredients. |
Workshop Technology
The first two weeks of year 9 are designed to ignite learner’s curiosity about furniture design and the design process. Learners will be offered experiences in the different subject areas to develop their understanding of different skills and their applications. Master-classes have been planned in the workshop in which the learners may demonstrate the skills they have learned in the first two weeks and use these to fulfil a set brief. This will give them a better knowledge about the material possibilities. Our students will learn to design and make products with creativity and originality using a wide range of materials, mostly wood, metal and plastic and have the opportunity to use a wide range of tools and equipment to manufacture quality products. During the course, learners are able to develop their skills in computer-aided design (CAD), quality control, environmental issues and sustainability of physical resources. |
